Dear Students, Families, Staff, and Community Partners,
As we open our doors for a new school year, it is a privilege to welcome you back and share the exciting path ahead for the San Juan School District.
This year, we are transitioning our Strategic Plan from vision to practice. Our guiding principle, UNITE to EMPOWER, will steer our district through 2030, supported by two essential pillars. Educate and Empower represents our commitment to raising student achievement and preparing every learner to lead a purposeful life. Unite and Engage reinforces our dedication to fostering trust, transparency, and a true sense of belonging within every school and community.
A Plan Rooted in Community
Nearly 600 students, parents, staff members, and neighbors contributed to our initial survey. Through ten focus groups and six community feedback cycles, your insights directly shaped this final document. This is truly a plan built by your voices, and I am deeply grateful for the time and perspective you shared.
Our Theme: "Listen to Learn"
This year’s theme, "Listen to Learn," reflects the vital next step in our collective work.
Meaningful listening does not end once a plan is approved. You can expect regular, accessible opportunities to share your thoughts with us. Our district leaders will be in your schools and communities more frequently, and we are committed to providing clearer communication regarding our decisions and the reasoning behind them. When you raise a concern, you deserve a thoughtful response; improving our responsiveness is my personal priority for the coming year.
Investing in Our Future
Students in Blanding are beginning the year in a brand-new elementary school building. At Montezuma Creek Elementary and San Juan High School, we are welcoming students through new, secure entryways—with similar safety enhancements underway at Albert R. Lyman Middle School and Monticello High School. Furthermore, Whitehorse High School is undergoing landscaping updates, and Monument Valley High School will open its new Teen Center later this year.
These physical improvements reflect the unwavering support of the SJSD School Board, whose members consistently prioritize the needs of our students and employees.
We are honored to serve the proud Navajo Nation, the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, and our pioneer, ranching, and mining communities. Our dedicated teachers and staff choose to build their lives here, drawn by the exceptional quality of life in San Juan County. Whether your family has been here for generations or you just arrived this summer, you are a vital part of this district.
